Sunset over Widemouth

Widemouth is the southernmost of the Bude beaches. As the name implies this is a substantial stretch of sand and faces west into the Atlantic. Consequently, when there is a big surf running there can be some absolutely monster waves at Widemouth which can make you wonder why going surfing seemed like a good idea at the time. The size of the beach means it's never that crowded even in summer. In the autumn and winter it's a good place to see expert surfers.

To the left and right of the beach there are rocky ridges, caused by the sandstone rocks being upended (by the continental plate collision that formed the tors of Bodmin Moor) and then eroded by the sea, which are quite hard work to walk across.

Directions

Follow the A39 towards Bude and turn off just before bude (signposted to Widemouth Bay). There is a large car park at the top of the beach.

These are just to the North of Bude. They are pebble beaches at high tide with some rocky ridges as the tide starts to go out. At low tide these beaches join into a huge expanse of sand which stretches all the way to Bude.

Directions to Northcott Mouth

Turn right off the A39 to Poughill just past Bude either at Stratton or (quicker) a bit further along at Bush. Go through Poughill, bearing right at the caravan park and then left at the T junction. There is a small cark park on the left just before the beach.

Directions to Sandymouth

Follow the A39 past Bude. Just before Kilkhampton take sharp left turn to Stibb and Sandymouth. Drive through Stibb, past the caravan park and there is a National Trust car park, toilets and a cafe (open in the summer) just next to the beach.
